For rewind shops

Commutators for DC motor rewinds, made to your drawing

A second source for the part most UK rewinders can only get from one place, slowly. We send a firm price within 2 working days, make to your drawing or data sheet, test before dispatch and invoice in pounds from a UK company.

How we work

Drawing in, the right part out

  1. Send the drawing, or the old part's dimensions

Any format, or our data sheet: segments, commutator and riser diameters, bore, copper and brush lengths, V-ring extensions, slot width and depth. Two photos of the old part help.

  2. We check it and send a firm price within 2 working days

Price in pounds, ex and inc VAT, with the standard sea-freight lead time and the urgent air option side by side. If a dimension will not work, say a slot depth that needs a bigger riser, we tell you before quoting.

  3. Made to drawing by specialist commutator factories

Silver-bearing copper, mica insulation, V-ring or moulded construction to suit. We keep your drawing on file so the next one is a one-line email.

  4. Imported and delivered with one UK invoice

We handle the import; you get a tracked parcel and a UK VAT invoice. 12-month warranty.

Who this is for

Armature rewind and DC motor repair shops, traction and lift maintenance, and plant engineers keeping older DC drives running: mills, cranes, hoists, presses, generators, locomotives and ships.

Lead time and quality

Almost every rewind job is holding up a machine, so the lead time is on the quote, not in the small print, and there is an urgent option for every part.

Lead time

Standard parts are made to order and shipped by sea: 4 to 5 weeks door to door, confirmed with the quote. Larger diameters can take longer; we tell you before you commit.

Urgent? Air freight

Most rewind jobs are holding up a machine. Ask for the urgent option and we air-freight the finished part, quoted alongside the standard price so you can choose.

Checked and guaranteed

We check every drawing and dimension before the order goes to the factory, so the part is made right first time. Every commutator carries a 12-month replace-or-refund warranty.

What we need to quote

A drawing is best. Without one, the data sheet asks for:

  • Number of segments and the commutator type (V-ring, moulded, riser, groove)
  • Commutator (brush) diameter, and the maximum unworn diameter if you know it
  • Riser diameter and diameter over the V-ring
  • Bore
  • Total copper length and brush surface length
  • Front and rear V-ring extensions
  • Riser (connection) width, slot width and slot depth
  • Quantity, how urgent it is, and roughly how many a year if it repeats

Give what you have. We would rather ask a question than make the wrong part, and no original part needs to leave your shop.

Types and sizes

V-ring commutators for industrial and traction armatures, moulded commutators for smaller and medium machines, riser-type and groove (hook) commutators for starters and small motors, and flat commutators where the brushes run on the face. From a few millimetres to the large sizes.

Trade terms

  • No minimum order; one part for one rebuild is normal
  • Volume pricing where a size repeats, with your drawings kept on file
  • Pay by bank transfer against a pro-forma invoice once you accept the quote, and open a trade account for repeat parts
  • A named contact who knows the job and replies within one working day

Where the parts are made

Made for us by specialist commutator manufacturers abroad, to the drawing or dimensions you send, and imported by us. We check every drawing before it goes to the factory, and you deal only with us, in pounds, with a UK VAT invoice.

Why a UK company matters

  • One UK VAT invoice in pounds; no duty, import VAT or courier fees on arrival
  • Someone in the UK who replies within one working day and chases the factory for you
  • A 12-month warranty you can actually claim on
  • Your drawings stay with us and are never published or shared beyond the factory making your part

Frequently asked

Do you need the old commutator?

No. A drawing, or dimensions and photos, is enough. If you would rather send the old part we can measure it, but it is rarely necessary.

What if the factory can't make a dimension?

We come back to you with the problem and the proposed change before anything is quoted or made.

Can you match a part I already buy elsewhere?

Usually, from the same drawing. Send it and we will quote like for like.

How do I pay?

Accept the quote and we send a pro-forma invoice, payable by bank transfer. Production starts once it is paid.

Who do I deal with?

UK Commutators, a trading name of Stratos Consultants Limited. The factory never contacts you and you never deal with import paperwork.
